Why Was Iran Never Colonized?

Iran is one of the few countries that was never formally colonized. This was not simply a matter of historical luck. Its sovereignty survived through the interaction of internal agency and external constraints: civilizational identity, social cohesion, strategic geography, historical memory and competition among great powers.

Beyond geopolitics, Iran’s endurance is rooted in a civilizational structure that repeatedly absorbed external forces and recreated itself. Persian language and literature sustained a sense of dignity and independence, while the combination of Iranian identity and Shiism turned autonomy from a political tactic into an ethical principle. Iran is not merely a modern nation-state; it is a civilization that has learned to survive through crisis.
